Tehran, IRNA – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said that the US was blindsided by the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and continues to make many miscalculations about Iran.
Ayatollah Khamenei was speaking at a Wednesday meeting with thousands of people from Qom Province at Imam Khomeini Complex in Tehran on the anniversary of the Qom uprising of January 9, 1978 in support of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, and against the Pahlavi regime.
“In the last few decades, the Americans have made miscalculations about Iran. My words are intended mostly for those who are intimidated by US policies,” the Leader said.
During the Pahlavi era, Iran was a stronghold of American interests, the Leader said. It was from within that stronghold that the Islamic Revolution emerged, and the Americans failed to foresee it, he added.
“The Americans were fooled, dazed, blindsided — this is what American miscalculation means.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei said the notion that Iran is having relations with European countries and should thus have ties with the United States as well was misguided.
“There’s a difference,” he said, “in that America [acted as if it] owned Iran, which was seized back from its claws [by the revolution].”
Ayatollah Khamenei said America bore a lingering grudge toward the Islamic Republic as a result.
The United States has incurred “heavy costs” over the past 46 years to “take Iran back,” but to no avail, the Leader explained.
“The US has been defeated in this country and is seeking to compensate for that defeat; hence, it continues to act in a hostile manner against the Iranian nation,” he pointed out.
One notable aspect of this “misguided policy” has been the use of economic sanctions aimed at crippling the Iranian economy, Ayatollah Khamenei said.
He emphasized that the sanctions policy has largely failed, as the Iranian nation has made significant advancements in science and technology despite the restrictions.
The Leader acknowledged that while sanctions have caused “some harm” to the Iranian economy, they have ultimately failed to achieve their intended goals.
Elsewhere in his address, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the extensive use of propaganda by the US and its allies to weaken the resistance front in the region, as they have been unable to defeat it militarily.
“In Gaza, they have massacred tens of thousands, but they could not extinguish the spirit of resistance,” he noted.
Ayatollah Khamenei cautioned that ongoing regional events, including the recent collapse of the Syrian government, should not overshadow the Palestinian cause, which he described as central to resistance efforts.
“The main essence of resistance is standing up against the malicious movements of the Zionist regime,” he pointed out.
The Leader further reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s commitment to supporting resistance movements across the region.
“We stand with the resistance in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Yemen, and any region that stands up against the Zionist regime,” he said.
